Beat perform in Bologna
02/10/09
On Tuesday 6th October, twenty-three Beat artists, facilitators, drummers and young people from Wandsworth Community Centre in east Belfast, will be Bologna-bound for a puppet and drum performance and seminar which marks the end of the Belbobru project. Belbobru is a collaborative partnership that has been running since November 2007, funded by the EU Culture 2007 Programme, involving multi-discipline arts and community participants from Belfast, Bologna and Brussels.
The four young people from Belfast who will be accompanying The Beat Initiative to Bologna are part of the Wandsworth Community Association youth group and have been involved with The Beat Initiative’s workshops and events over the past five years, including performances as part of BelBoBru. They are the only under-18 participants in a cast of 60 who will be performing in Bologna. The BelBoBru project involved skill sharing and development in the areas of carnival drumming and carnival arts.
Puppet-making was a central theme of the project and Zinneke, a Belgian festival parade arts organisation, was the lead partner in teaching and sharing the skills Zinneke have developed in this area since the first Zinneke parade in Brussels in 2000. Belfast had a sneak peak at some of the puppets that have resulted at Culture Night in September 2009.
