Bongar, from Olinda-Recife in Pernambuco, NE Brazil are in Belfast for a cultural exchange with Beat Carnival.

They will be working with Beat's youth groups, Beat'n'drum and traditional drummers and musicians. The Residency culminates in the Beat Carnival Weekend with the Belfast City Carnival on Saturday 19 June.

Grupo Bongar from Olinda, Pernambuco, North East Brazil

Seven members of Bongar are visiting Belfast for Beat’s carnival residency, culminating in performances at the Black Box on Friday at 7.30pm and on Sunday afternoon, and of course the big one is the 19 June Carnival programme.

Beat’s new Carnival Academy programme is underway... We have received great response from groups wanting to join the programme: organisations ranging through schools, Girls’ Brigades, youth clubs, senior members of the community and people with disabilities.

The Maracatu Masterclass weekender on the 22 and 23 May 2010, held at Mandela Hall at QUBSU, Belfast was a huge success. 20 students from different backgrounds over the course of the weekend attended the classes.

Carnival - Puppet Picnic - June 2010

On Friday 18 June, we will be holding an open workshop in Victoria Square 4-6pm for anyone who would like to come along and make a puppet to bring with them to watch the parade and to join in the puppet picnic.

Bongar - Brazilian Samba Band

The Beat Carnival are delighted to have our Brazilian Samba Band friends Bongar with us for a two week residency in the lead up to Belfast City Carnival, 19 June 2010.

The Beat Carnival are inviting individuals and groups to participate in a Maracatu and Bahian (from North East Brazil) dance masterclass on May 22 and 23. The weekend will be led by Mariana Pinho.

Friday Night in the City Centre - The Beat Carnival Presents the Belfast City Carnival street party!

Wherever you are in the city come and join the sights and sounds of carnival, as puppets and music will be on show throughout the evening. You will see and hear the sights and sounds of carnival.

Maracatu Ilha Brilho - 26 June Performance

The Ireland Drummers would like to present Maracatu Ilha Brilho (Eel-ya Breel-yo). This is a traditional music project involving three cities from around Ireland. Kilkenn’s Jacare Samba group, Sligo’s Samboeire and Belfast’s Beatndrum have delved into old traditional northeastern brasilian rhythm and song.
